“What Moves You? is a participatory arts project connecting to communities using movement and performance.” Co-created by Laura Booth, Dawn Hartley, Quee MacArthur and Niamh O’Loughlin from the original concept by Niamh.
In Celtic folk tales, a Selkie is a creature who is a seal in the sea and changes into a human when on land by taking off their special coat. But a Selkie can also just be the name for a grey seal… You have to look closely..’My Friend Selkie’ grew from a Sea Path Walk by Niamh O’Loughlin, encouraging children to look out for signs of a Selkie on a beach walk; Bubbles in the sea? Strange songs? Seaweed that could be Selkie hair? Or maybe – the real giveaway – shells, all in a line? Selkie is learning about the stars. Jo needs to learn to swim. Can they help each other? With live music, children are invited to take part. See you at the Crab Disco! This original tale is told through dance, text and songs and has been enjoyed by children aged 3+ in schools and halls across Scotland.
‘My Friend Selkie’ first theatre preview was presented at Loretto School Theatre, Musselburgh in partnership with The Brunton, & the Premiere took place at The Byre Theatre, St Andrews in May 2023, both including live Audio Description by Emma-Jane McHenry. It is performing at the Edinburgh Fringe 2023
