L’Eveil_ The Arches, Glasgow (2012)
Consistently questioning what is socially acceptable, L’Eveil deal with the themes of Growth, Transformation, Beauty and Disfigurment. The uniqueness of the piece arises from the indivisibilty of performer, sculptural costume and movement, challenging the distortion of the body, and its place in society. The costume is created not around a character or an idea but through the relationship between body, material, movement and observer, creating a strong visual dynamic. Atypically visually directed through a costume and theatre designer eye and not script led, this project is an inventive and inspiring way of looking at costume.
Shortlisted for the NZ international costume Art competition World of WearableArt (WOW) in 2010, the costume is enterely made of hemp and recycled fabric hand dyed using Shibori techniques.
